A Healthy Diet and Physical Activity May be Your Best Defense Against Kidney Disease

Healthy Eating FruitsKidney disease affects nearly 20 million people, and is the 9th leading cause of death in the United States. Kidney disease does damage to your kidneys, stopping them from cleaning your blood they way they should. This allows waste to build up in your body, and can even do damage to your heart, and weaken your bones.

Maintaining a healthy diet is the first step to prolonging the health of your kidneys. Keeping your blood pressure in the correct range, and eating lower sodium foods as well as fruits and vegetables can make a huge difference.  Remember to try and stay physically active as well.  Many are there for support and to help inform people of their choices, such as the National Kidney Foundation, the ‘leading organization in the U.S. dedicated to the awareness, prevention and treatment of kidney disease for hundreds of thousands of healthcare professionals, millions of patients and their families, and tens of millions of Americans at risk.

Diabetes remains the leading cause of kidney disease. In 2012, diabetes led to over 50,000 new cases of kidney disease. The fact is, most people with kidney disease aren’t aware they have it.  This is why it’s so important to get screened early, and continuously meet your sugar levels regularly if you have diabetes. Be sure to get checked out by your physician if you begin to see any unusual symptoms, which may include:

• Fatigue, weakness
• Difficult, painful urination
• Foamy urine
• Pink, dark urine (blood in urine)
• Increased need to urinate (especially at night)
• Puffy eyes
• Swollen face, hands, abdomen, ankles, feet
• Increased thirst
