SurfMed Team Meets with Director of Medicaid to Discuss Any Willing Provider Provision

WP_20140313_003Recently, SurfMed joined other Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Providers in Tallahassee, Florida to meet with the Director of Medicaid at the Agency for Health Care Administration. The main topic was the lack of effort assuring proper implementation of the Any Willing Provider provision of the Statewide Medicaid Managed Care program.

The Any Willing Provider provision, or AWP, was crafted into the sweeping Medicaid reform law because it was revealed in other states, where Medicaid programs were handed over to private companies, that DME monopolies were quickly created that forced 80 to 90 % of all DME providers out of business. Most important, patient choice was stifled at the expense of quality care.

With a clear negative history for DME under managed care, AWP required all Managed Care Organizations (MCOs) to contract with every qualified DME provider in the state who agrees to meet the lowest negotiated price. Currently MCOs have contracted with third party administrators that are not contracting with everyone and those trying to contract are throwing out unrealistic prices in order to drive market share to their in-house companies, which is a violation of the legislative intent.

We are proud to always stand for the law and what is right in health care. If you have an issue Medicaid, please give SurfMed a call and we will try to help.SurfMed, a sister company of Caring Home Care, has been concerned about this for some time and came together with other like-minded small DME companies to provide AHCA with examples of violations.
