Keeping your loved one’s home organized is key to decluttering their life and making living at home much better and happier for them. We have five tools that can help you get your parent’s home organized and you won’t need Mary Poppins to do it.
Baskets and Baskets Galore
You can help your loved one stay organized by hanging baskets all around the house with items they will always need and refer to. For example, you should hang a basket near the front door that holds all of their mail such as bills and cards from family and friends.
Make sure they have a laundry basket in their bedroom where they can put all of their dirty clothes in. Have a housekeeping basket that carries all cleaning supplies such as disinfectant wipes, disinfectant sprays, sponges, a duster, gloves, and more. Another good basket idea would be to have one close to the washer and dryer to hold laundry detergent and dryer sheets. You all can also have baskets in the kitchen that hold all cooking utensils, seasonings, oils, and more.
Important Documentation File
Keep all of your parent’s important documentation such as birth certificates, social security cards, medical records, bank account information, will, insurance cards, and more in one safe place in a folder or binder. That way you always know where all of your parents’ important information and documentation is when needed.
Medication Section
Make sure there is a section in your parent’s bedroom or bathroom that has all of the medications and vitamins they are supposed to take daily. You could also get them a pill organizer with labels that says the different days of the week so you all know what they need to take on what day. You can also keep a mini notepad next to the medication to write down the different times medication is taken to keep track for record purposes. In the same section, you can have other medical emergency items such as a first aid kit and defibrillator.
Calendar Management
Keep a big visible calendar in your parent’s home that shows important dates and appointments so they don’t miss anything. This calendar could keep all birthdays, anniversaries, doctor appointments, hobbies, and classes (if any) in an organized place.
Keep it Clean
Be sure your loved one’s home gets deep cleaned daily. The bedroom, bathroom, living room, and kitchen. Dishes need to be washed on the regular and so do the toilets. Your parent’s bed needs to be made and floors need to be swept, mopped, and vacuumed. Keeping their home clean will help kill bacteria, keep the germs away and clear away unnecessary clutter. As well as keeping stuff off of the floor.
