While your loved ones are getting older, it’s important to pay extra close attention to their needs while they’re living at home. It’s crucial that you observe their actions and fully listen to them when they’re telling you things about their daily life.

If they happen to live in a different house as you, you can make daily check-ins with them. The check-ins can be in-person or a daily phone call in the afternoon or evenings, that way the majority of the day has passed, and they can tell you all about their day. Be sure to ask them questions like what did you eat today? Did you have any appointments you went to and if so, how did they go? Are you getting enough sleep? What are some hobbies or activities you enjoy doing?  You can ask these same questions during an in-person check-in as well when you visit them in the afternoon or evening. Even if you can’t visit them every day, it would be great to see them in person at least once or twice a week.

Be sure to monitor their daily living and personal activities such as brushing their teeth, taking a bath or shower, using the bathroom, brushing or combing their hair, getting dressed by putting clothes and shoes on, walking around the home from room to room. You should also monitor their eating habits, are their diets changing, are they eating just a little or not at all, and are they drinking enough water.

Be on the lookout regarding their emotions, are they having mood swings more often than not, are they sadder or happier. Try and find out the root of their emotions. Just like their physical health, their mental health is also important. You want to avoid your loved one going into a deep dark hole of depression. You want them to smile and be happy with their life as well as themselves.

If your loved one ever gets frustrated with you by asking you too many questions about their life or if they feel you’re being too impulsive or nosey, gently remind them that it’s coming from a place of care as well as concern. That you want what’s best for them and to ensure their happiness. They took care of you when you were younger, now it’s your turn to take care of them as they’re getting older.
