There comes a time when your loved one grows older and they’re going to need to be taken care of to stay healthy, safe, and happy. Creating an overall plan for their care can be useful so you can support them and look after their well-being. Your parents took care of you when you were younger and now it’s time for you to take care of them as they are getting older.
Home Safety
Whether your loved one is going to be living with you in your home or living in an assisted living facility, it’s important to make their living space safe.
Install grab bars in their bedroom, the bathroom, and stair railings to help them hold onto something while they’re getting up or going down. Check and make sure all light bulbs and light switches are working properly so they can see and are able to turn the lights on and off.
Make sure there’s nothing on the floors or walkways that could be a trip hazard. Be sure to have all appliances easily reachable and working.
Medical Needs
You can download a calendar app on your phone, tablet, or computer that sets reminders for when your elderly loved one has a medical appointment coming up.
These appointments can range from doctors, physical therapists, dentists, and more. Another good tip would be to get them different pill containers that show the day of the week so they can easily know what pills and/or vitamins that they need to take every day of the week.
Once the container is empty, you will be able to tell when it needs to be refilled for them.
Finances
You can look into options to see if you can receive financial support while caring for your loved one. B
e mindful if they have medicare or other health insurances for their medical visits and/or medical emergencies. It’s good to keep in mind you’ll need a budget if you’re going to hire a caregiver or home health aide. You’ll need to buy extra groceries for their meal preparations as well.
It’s important, to be honest about your needs and abilities. Think about what you’re realistically able to do. Don’t forget to put your needs into consideration so you can maintain a happy and healthy lifestyle. You wouldn’t want to stress and overwhelm yourself.
Whether you’re the main caregiver for your loved one or decide to use a nursing agency or assisted living community, it’s important to know that your loved one is getting the best care possible. A good thing about your loved one reaching a certain age and needing round-the-clock care is there are so many options to choose from to help you.
